In the latest World Health Organization (WHO) report, an investigation has commenced to establish whether or not the SARS-CoV-2 virus is being introduced on global food imports.
The SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes the COVID-19 virus may persist “on foods internationally” as well as playing “a potential role of food in the transmission of the virus,’ states the WHO Situation Report published today.
“As a general rule, the consumption of raw or undercooked animal products should be avoided. Raw meat, raw milk or raw animal organs should be handled with care to avoid cross-contamination with uncooked foods,” it continues to warn.
This comes on the heels of Iran reporting their 18th case in 24 hours and South Korea skyrocketing to 204 cases with 2 fatalities. The United States and Australia have also reported an increase of cases at 35 and 19 positive COVID-19 tests despite stringent travel bans now being extended.
Outside of China, Italy has reported a single fatality, while Iran, Japan and Hong Kong have noted 2 fatalities each.
According to several health sites, the best advice is to remain at home when possible and maintain hand hygiene. Don’t consume raw or undercooked foods and if you have the sniffles, use a common sense approach, err on the side of caution and use a mask.
