“…everything from music to cinema, old and recent works, art, photography, philosophy, current news, essays, book critique…” .
Why?
The fast pace of technological advancement has brought humanity to its knees. Where those who have in decades passed, implied the world is heading for a cyborg age, we have in my belief, already reached it. The only thing is, we are the robots. We sit in our dark rooms with our glowing monitors in front of us, absorbing the information as quick as it’s published. You’re guilty of it right now. You’re reading this.
What do we mean by the word Dystopian or Dystopia? What is the difference between a dystopian world and a post-apocalyptic one? In a world of fast paced technology, and a lingering sentiment for the old – perhaps, more ignorant – world, we find ourselves constantly challenged by the environment in which we live. We find ourselves challenged by an ever growing list of unanswered questions.
Struck by questions that we cannot answer in simple terms, we turn to what we know best for our answers. Do you ever wonder why bloody and horrific television shows such as The Walking Dead are so popular amongst viewers of all ages? Have you contemplated why we draw our attention to survivalists as they climb sheer cliffs, and plunge into icy waters before our eyes, in our living room?
We find ourselves challenged by an ever growing list of unanswered questions.
We are trying subconsciously, to discover the key to our survival. The Walking Dead is not just about zombies and pushing an arrow through someone’s head. In fact, the zombie is a secondary plot to the primary one of humanity and its psychology in a dystopian world. On the other hand, Bear Grylls is simply our British instructor for such an occasion, if there ever was to be one – a dystopian society that is, not a zombie apocalypse.
It is from these ramblings that I’ve decided to construct a world for those curious about the luxurious word “Dystopian.” (Rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?) Within this world there will be essays written by academics and everyday citizens alike, articles, newsfeeds, as well as critiques and reviews of books, cinema, music and art.
…the luxurious word “Dystopian.”
The Lazy Dystopian is synonymous with “everything dystopian” and means just that. And by constructing this site, I hope that we can all find some answers that may give us some peace…or at least, some better answers.
